DIGITAL: Mo. 2.10 ab 20h Comicstammtisch mit / Comics Meetup with Lawrence Grimm

Im Oktober wollen wir uns mit der Arbeit an einer Comiczeitschrift beschäftigen. Der diesmalige Mentor des digitalen Comicstammtischs der Comicbibliothek Renate ist Lawrence Grimm, Mitherausgeber der deutschsprachigen Zeitschrift Strapazin. Lawrence, geboren 1978 in Zürich, ist von australisch-deutsch-schweizerischer Nationalität. Nach Jahren des Theaterspiels studierte er Film an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, gewann mehrere Kurzfilm-Preise und war mit seinem Diplomfilm Finalist der Studenten-Oscars. Die Erfahrung der visuellen Narration verlagerte er in die Welt der Cartoons und Illustrationen. Mit schwarzer Tusche zeichnet er Momente des Lebens, der Liebe, der Einsamkeit und Wiederholung. Am Stammtisch bietet er uns Einblicke in seine Kunst und in seine Arbeit mit Strapazin an, das 1984 das Licht der Welt erblickte und zur grössten deutschsprachigen Zeitschrift der Avantgarde/Independent-Comicszene wurde.

In October, we want to learn about the work on a comic magazine. This month, the mentor of the digital comics meetup of the Comic Library Renate is Lawrence Grimm, co-editor of the German language magazine Strapazin. Born in Zurich in 1978, Lawrence is of Australian-German-Swiss nationality. After years of theatre, he studied film at the Zurich University of the Arts, won several short film awards and was a finalist at the Student Oscars with his graduation film. He shifted the experience of visual narration into the world of cartoons and illustrations. With black ink he draws moments of life, love, loneliness and repetition. At the meetup, he will give us insights into his art and his work with Strapazin, which was founded in 1984 and became the biggest German-language magazine of the avant-garde/independent comics scene.

DIGITAL: Mo. 4.9 ab 20h Comicstammtisch mit / Comics Meetup with Alice Socal

Nach einem Sonderstammtisch zum Thema 'Comic-Stipendien' und mit Mappenberatung im August kommen wir zurück zum gewöhnlichen Format: Im September haben wir eine Comickünstlerin als Mentorin des digitalen Comicstammtischs der Comicbibliothek Renate, und was für eine! Alice Socal wurde 1986 in Venedig geboren. Sie begann ihr Studium in Illustration und Comic an der Kunstakademie von Bologna und beendete dieses bei Anke Feuchtenberger und Stefano Ricci an der HAW in Hamburg. Ihr erstes Comicbuch »Luke« hat sie 2011 bei einem kleinen italienischen Verlag, G.I.U.D.A. Edizioni, veröffentlicht. Ihr nächster und längerer Comic »Sandro« erschien in Italien (Eris Edizioni, 2015) und Deutschland (Rotopol, 2016). Die nächste Graphic-Novel »Cry me a river« wurde 2017 gleichzeitig von Coconino Press und Rotopol veröffentlicht; das Buch gewann den R. Dirk Award als beste Liebesgeschichte. Ihr allerletzter Comic »Wie lange noch« ist ein bei Rotopol erschienes Buch über ihre Schwangerschaften. Alice Socal zeichnet zudem gerne kurze GIF-Animationen für ihren Instagram-Account und lebt und arbeitet als Illustratorin in Belin. Weitere Infos auf alicesocal.de

After a special meetup on the topic of 'comic scholarships' and with portfolio advice in August, we are back to the usual format: in September we have a comic artist as mentor of the digital comics meetup of the Comic Library Renate, and what an artist! Alice Socal was born in Venice in 1986. She began her studies in illustration and comics at the Art Academy of Bologna and finished them with Anke Feuchtenberger and Stefano Ricci at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. She published her first comic book "Luke" at a small Italian publishing house, G.I.U.D.A. Edizioni, in 2011. Her next and longer comic "Sandro" appeared in Italy (Eris Edizioni, 2015) and Germany (Rotopol, 2016). Her following graphic novel "Cry me a river" was published simultaneously by Coconino Press and Rotopol in 2017 - this book won the R. Dirk Award for best romance/love story. Her latest comic "Wie lange noch" is a book about her pregnancies. It has been published in Germany by Rotopol in 2022. Alice Socal also enjoys drawing short GIF animations for her Instagram account and lives and works as an illustrator in Belin.

7. und 8. August: Beratung zu Comicstipendien / August 7 and 8: Advice on comic scholarships

COMIC-KÜNSTLER*INNEN AUFGEPASST!

Du willst dich für ein Comicstipendium bewerben, brauchst dafür Ratschläge? Möchtest du die Stärken und Schwächen deines Projekts kennenlernen? Wir unterstützen dich dabei.

Wann und wo? Digitaler Comicstammtisch (7. August) und Comicbibliothek Renate (8. August, in der Tucholskystr. 32, 10117 Berlin)

Am Montag, dem 7. August, sind Comicstipendien das Thema der Sonderausgabe des digitalen Stammtischs der Renate. Um 20 Uhr hält Axel Halling vom deutschen Comicverein einen Vortrag mit Q&A über Stipendiumsangebote. Im Anschluss berät die Comic-Künstlerin Birgit Weyhe Bewerber*Innen für ihre Bewerbungsmappen.

Am Dienstag, dem 8. August ist wiederum Comiczeichnerin Sheree Domingo von der ComicGewerkschaft in der Comicbibliothek Renate von 15.30 bis 18.30 Uhr, um weitere Interessent*innen vor Ort zu beraten.

Comic Scholarships will be the topic of the Digital Meetup at Renate Comics Library on Monday, August 7. At 20:00, Axel Halling from the German Comics Association will give a talk with Q&A about scholarship opportunities. Afterward, comic artist Birgit Weyhe will be present to advise you and review your portfolios.

On Tuesday, August 8th, comic artist Sheree Domingo from the German Comic Union will be at the Comic Library Renate to help those who need advice from 15:30 to 18:30.

If you are interested, please register at augusto dot paim at gmail dot com or via Instagram @paimaugusto You will receive more details from Augusto Paim, the coordinator of the digital meetup at Renate Comics Library.

Please provide the following information:

* Which meeting would you like to attend? (Digital or Onsite).
* Would it be okay to have a group consultation or would you prefer it to be more private?
* Which comic scholarship are you most interested in?

If you would like Birgit to consult with you digitally, please send us your application with more details on your needs as soon as possible.

Raus, raus,
aus der Gluthölle der Stadt! Oder doch nicht? Wenn alle weg sind sind wir trotzdem da! Lasst euch von der RENATE mit Sonnenöl eincremen, aufs Surfbrett mitnehmen und riesige Sandburgen bauen. Natürlich mit den Stift! Den wie sollte es auch sein wenn arme Comiczeichner*Innen sich keinen Urlaub auf den Malediven leisten können?

out of the ember hell of the city! Or not? When everyone's gone, we'll still be there! Let the RENATE apply suntan lotion, take you out on the surfboard and build huge sandcastles. With the pen, of course! Because how could it be if poor comic artists can't afford a holiday in the Maldives?
