RenAHHHHH – sagt Renate der weissbekittelteten Sadistin ins Gesicht. „Wann haben sie die schwarzen Punkte bemerkt?“ fragte das Geschöpf unter der Maske. Renate konnte förmlich die Zahnräder hinter der Stirn mit Lampe rattern hören: Beulenpest, Leberzirrhose, Spunk? Das sah gar nicht gut aus, jetzt schwang die Kittel auch noch den Hammer – Renates Knie zuckte und ZACK!
Auch Probleme beim Entfernen von Tuscheflecken? Farbe, Tusche, Print lasst uns über Flecken beim Comic-Zeichnen austauschen!

“AHHHHH,” Renate shouted in the face of the sadist in the white coat. “When did you notice the black spots?” asked the creature beneath the mask. Renate could literally hear the cogs rattling behind her forehead, illuminated by a lamp: bubonic plague, cirrhosis of the liver, spunk? It didn’t look good at all; now the woman in the lab coat was even wielding a hammer – Renate’s knee jerked and BAM!
Any trouble removing ink stains too? Paint, ink, print – let’s chat about stains when drawing comics!

Mo. 3.08 ab 20h Comicstammtisch mit / Comics Meetup with Alexander Braun

Auf dem digitalen Stammtisch der Comicbibliothek Renate im August beschäftigen wir uns kunstgeschichtlich mit Comics. Dr. Alexander Braun, unser Mentor, ist Kunsthistoriker, bildender Künstler und Kurator sowie Begründer der German Academy of Comic Art. Dr. Braun erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Stipendien und hat in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten eine der umfangreichsten Sammlungen zur Geschichte des Comics zusammengetragen, hinzu kommen eine Vielzahl an von ihm kuratierten Ausstellungen. Darunter 2009 die Ausstellung »Jahrhundert der Comics – Die Zeitungs-Strip-Jahre«, 2011 die umfassende Retrospektive zum Werk von Winsor McCay sowie 2021 die Ausstellung zum Werk Will Eisners. 2022 folgten mit »Horror im Comic« und »125 Jahre Katzenjammer Kids« zwei weitere Ausstellungen in Dortmund, seiner Heimatstadt. Die dazugehörenden Publikationen sind in unterschiedlichen Verlagen erschienen.

At the digital meetup of the Renate Comic Library in August, we’ll be exploring comics from an art-historical perspective. Our mentor, Dr. Alexander Braun, is an art historian, visual artist, and curator, as well as a founder of the German Academy of Comic Art. Dr. Braun has received numerous awards and fellowships and, over the past two decades, has assembled one of the most extensive collections on the history of comics, in addition to curating a large number of exhibitions. These include the 2009 exhibition "The Century of Comics—The Newspaper Strip Years," the 2011 comprehensive retrospective on the work of Winsor McCay, and the 2021 exhibition on Will Eisner’s work. In 2022, two further exhibitions followed in Dortmund, his hometown: "Horror in Comics" and "125 Years of the Katzenjammer Kids." The accompanying publications have been released by various publishers.

ANALOG: Mo. 13. Juli ab 19h Comicstammtisch/ Comicmeeting

Renate türmte. Stein auf Stein, oder schwarzes Rechteck auf Rechteck. Mauerwerksfugen, Fenster Türen, Gesimse, die Tusche tropfte die Fassade hinunter, Häuserschluchten zerrannen, Türme gipfelten und bekriegten einander, die Feuerwehrleitern waren viel zu kurz und die Beton-Möwen kreischten…
Verirrt ihr euch auch in Stadtlandschaften? Findet keinen Fluchtpunkt auf den Papier? Dann kommt doch einfach mit Euren urbanen Comics zum Renate-Comicstammtisch! Wie immer um 19:00 Uhr in der Renate-Comicbibliothek, Montag den 13. Juli, Tucholskystraße 32.

Renate was building a tower. Stone upon stone, or black rectangle upon rectangle. Masonry joints, windows, doors, cornices; ink dripped down the façade; urban canyons melted away; towers soared to the sky and clashed with one another; the fire brigade ladders were far too short; and the concrete seagulls screeched…

Mo. 6.07 ab 20h Comicstammtisch mit / Comics Meetup with Thomas Gilke

So viele Menschen arbeiten an der Herstellung eines Comics... Sie bleiben doch unsichtbar, obwohl das Ergebnis ihrer Arbeit sehr sichtbar ist. Auf dem digitalen Stammtisch der Comicbibliothek Renate im Juli blicken wir hinter die Kulissen mit einem Mentor, der für unterschiedliche Comicverlage und mit bekannten Zeichner*innen arbeitet: Thomas Gilke, geboren 1973 in München, studierte Kommunikationsdesign an der FH München und arbeitet seither als freier Grafiker, Comicmacher und Illustrator. Mit der Geburt des ersten Kindes zog er nach Berlin um, wo er zum Einsatz „in der zweiten Reihe“ - so wie er es nennt! - für diverse Comicverlage (avant, Reprodukt, Carlsen, Egmont, Kibitz) kam: Buchgestaltung, Buchherstellung, Lettering, Kolorierung, Coverdesign usw. Als zeichnender Autor entwickelte er Beiträge zu Anthologien wie »Wie geht es Dir?«, »Gerne würdest Du allen soviel sagen« oder »Quantastische Comics«. Außerdem veröffentlichte er die Sammlung »Das Buch mit dem geheimnisvollen Titel«.

So many people work on the creation of a comic... Yet they remain invisible, even though the result of their work is very visible. In July, at the digital meetup of the Renate Comic Library, we’ll take a look behind the scenes with a mentor who works for various comic publishers and with well-known artists: Thomas Gilke, born in Munich in 1973, studied communication design at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and has since worked as a freelance graphic designer, comic creator, and illustrator. After the birth of his first child, he moved to Berlin, where he began working 'behind the scenes'—as he puts it!—for various comic publishers (avant, Reprodukt, Carlsen, Egmont, Kibitz): book design, book production, lettering, coloring, cover design, etc. As an author-illustrator, he contributed to anthologies such as "Wie geht es Dir?," "Gerne würdest Du allen soviel sagen," and "Quantastische Comics." He also published the collection "Das Buch mit dem geheimnisvollen Titel."

ANALOG: Mo. 8. Juni ab 19h Comicstammtisch/ Comicmeeting

Schwungvoll flossen die Linien, da ein tiefes Tal mit Schraffuren, oben luftige Striche wie Kondensstreifen am Himmer, Punkte, Kreuze, Dick und Dünn, Laut und Leiser, flächig und körperlich – wat? Wieso hatte sich der Typ an die Wand gestellt die Renate bearbeitete? Sein Anzug sah doch mit den neuen Muster viel besser als vorher, kein Grund so aus der Haut zu fahren! Zack hatte er den Farbeimer auf Nase, Kritiker hatte sie noch nie gemocht…
Na auch im Farbrausch? Mit Farbe bekleckert, bunte Punkte im Auge? Dann kommt zum mehrfarbigen Renate-Comicstammtisch. Wie immer in der Renate-Comicbibliothek, 19:00 Uhr, Montag den 8. Juni, Tucholskystraße 32.

The lines flowed with vigour: a deep valley of hatching, airy strokes at the top like contrails in the sky, dots, crosses, thick and thin, loud and soft, flat and three-dimensional – what? Why had that bloke stood right in front of the wall Renate was working on? His suit looked much better than before with the new patterns – no reason to get so worked up! In a flash, he’d got the paint bucket over his head; she’d never liked critics…
Well, are you in a paint frenzy too? Splattered with paint, seeing colourful dots? Then come along to the multicoloured Renate comic book get-together. As always at the Renate Comic Library, 7 pm, Monday 8 June, Tucholskystraße 32.

Mo. 1.06 ab 20h Comicstammtisch mit / Comics Meetup with Nadia Budde

Comics sind doch Kindersache, und das werden wir im Juni auf dem digitalen Stammtisch der Comicbibliothek Renate beweisen können. Die Mentorin ist halt Nadia Budde, die zu den profiliertesten Kinderbuchautorinnen und -illustratorinnen Deutschlands zählt. Geboren 1967 in Ost-Berlin, auch dort aufgewachsen, studierte sie an der Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee. Gleich ihr erstes Bilderbuch »Eins, zwei, drei, Tier« (Peter Hammer Verlag) wurde 2000 mit dem Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreis ausgezeichnet. Ein weiteres Mal gewann sie den Preis 2009 mit ihrem biografischen Comic »Such dir was aus, aber beeil dich!«. Zahlreiche preisgekrönte Bücher folgten. Des Weiteren ist Nadia Budde als Übersetzerin tätig. 2017 wurde sie für den Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award nominiert.

Comics are for kids, indeed, and we'll be able to prove it in June at the Renate Comic Library's digital meetup. Our mentor is none other than Nadia Budde, one of Germany's most prominent children's book authors and illustrators. Born in 1967 in East Berlin, where she also grew up, she studied at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art. Her very first picture book, "Eins, zwei, drei, Tier" (Peter Hammer Verlag), was awarded the German Youth Literature Prize in 2000. She won the prize again in 2009 for her biographical comic "Such dir was aus, aber beeil dich!" Numerous award-winning books followed. Nadia Budde also works as a translator. In 2017, she was nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
