Drückende Hitze. Die Luft zum schneiden. An der Bar der immer da sitzt. Der Pianist war auch schon mal schlechter. Die Schwingtür knarzt. Der Typ mit Hut. Langsam gleitet seine Hand herab und BANG!

Okay, okay eine Schwingtür hat die RENATE noch nicht, aber wir arbeiten dran. Also falls ihr noch ein kühles Bier braucht bevor ihr in den Sonnenuntergang reitet: Die Renate hats.
Und wir können am legendären Comicstammtisch in der RENATE darüber pokern ob es nun Bang, Peng oder Piou, Pow und Pam heisst. Schießeisen bitte am Tresen abgeben.

Oppressive heat. The air to cut through. At the bar, always sitting there. The pianist has been worse. The swinging door creaks. The guy in the hat. His hand slowly slides down and BANG!

Okay, okay, the RENATE doesn't have a swinging door yet, but we're working on it. So if you need a cold beer before you ride off into the sunset: The Renate has it.
And we can play poker at the legendary comic regulars' table in the RENATE about whether it's called Bang, Peng or Piou, Pow and Pam. Please hand in your shooting irons at the bar.

Mo. 1.7 ab 20h Comicstammtisch mit / Comics Meetup with Alex Chauvel

Im Juli verlassen wir die deutschsprachige Comicszene und bewegen uns in Richtung Frankreich. Aber nicht ganz! Denn der diesmalige Mentor des digitalen Stammtisches der Comicbibliothek Renate ist zwar sehr französisch, lebt aber seit 2013 in Deutschland: Alex Chauvel, Jahrgang 1986, studierte an der HAW in Hamburg, aber vor der Migration besuchte er noch die École Européenne Supérieure de l'Image in Angoulême - très chic! -, wo er einige Kommilitonen kennenlernte, mit denen er 2010 den experimentellen Comic-Verlag éditions polystyrène mitbegründete. Alex Chauvel veröffentlicht auch eigene Comics, manchmal als Szenarist, manchmal als Zeichner, und macht Comics überwiegend in ungewöhnlichen Formaten. Neuerlich ist beim Berliner Verlag Round Not Square sein Comic »Flüssiger Bär« erschienen, eine 15-Meter-lange Buchrolle.

In July, we leave the German-language comic scene towards France. But not really! For the digital meetup of the Comics Library Renate has this time a mentor, who is very French, but has been living in Germany since 2013: Alex Chauvel, born in 1986, studied at the HAW in Hamburg, but before migrating, he attended the École Européenne Supérieure de l'Image in Angoulême - très chic! - where he met some fellow students with whom he co-founded the experimental comic publishing house éditions polystyrène in 2010. Alex Chauvel also publishes his own comics, sometimes as a writer, sometimes as an illustrator, and creates comics mainly in unusual formats. His comic "Liquid Bear," a 15-metre-long handbound scroll, was recently published by Berlin-based publishing house Round Not Square.

ANALOG: Mo. 10.06. ab 19h Comicstammtisch/ Comicmeeting

Das soll ein Comic sein? Wo sind denn da die Bildsequenzen, die Outlines, Glupschaugen, Speedlines, Strumpfhosen?  Soundworts und Knubbelnasen nicht vergessen, Protagonist und Sidekick haben auch dazu sein, genau wie Happy End und diverse Plotpoints!

Ihr habt ganz andere Vorstellungen von Comics (Bildgeschichten, Mangas, Graphic Novels)? Ihr macht auch nicht Sachen nach Schema F?
Dann seid ihr genau richtig auf den legendären Comic-Stammtisch in der Renate!

This is supposed to be a comic? Where are the picture sequences, the outlines, googly eyes, speedlines, tights?  Don't forget sound words and bulbous noses, protagonists and sidekicks, as well as happy endings and various plot points!

Do you have completely different ideas about comics (picture stories, mangas, graphic novels)? You don't follow the rules either?
Then you've come to the right place at the legendary Comic-Stammtisch in the Renate!

Mo. 3.6 ab 20h Comicstammtisch mit / Comics Meetup with Nicolas Mahler

Um das erste Halbjahr des digitalen Stammtisches der Comicbibliothek Renate 2024 mit Prunk und Pomp abzuschließen, haben wir einen Mentor eingeladen, der zu den Größten der deutschsprachigen Comicszene gehört: Nicolas Mahler ist 1969 geboren und lebt und arbeitet als Comiczeichner und Illustrator in Wien. Seine Comics und Cartoons erscheinen in Zeitungen und Magazinen wie Die Zeit, NZZ am Sonntag, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung und in der Titanic. Für sein umfangreiches Werk wurde er bereits mehrfach ausgezeichnet; unter anderem erhielt er 2010 den Max und Moritz-Preis als »Bester deutschsprachiger Comickünstler« und 2015 den Preis der Literaturhäuser. Seit 2024 ist Nicolas Mahler künstlerischer Leiter der Schule für Dichtung (sfd) in Wien.

To finish with pomp and circumstance the first semester 2024 of the digital meetup of the Comics Library Renate, we have invited a mentor who is one of the biggest names on the German-language comics scene: Nicolas Mahler was born in 1969 and lives and works as a comic artist and illustrator in Vienna. His comics and cartoons appear in newspapers and magazines such as Die Zeit, NZZ am Sonntag, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and Titanic. He has received several awards for his extensive work, including the Max and Moritz Prize for 'Best German-language Comic Artist' in 2010 and the Houses of Literature Prize in 2015. Since 2024, Nicolas Mahler has also been the artistic director of the School for Poetry in Vienna.

Mo. 6.5 ab 20h Comicstammtisch mit / Comics Meetup with Franz Suess

Eine besondere Ausgabe des digitalen Comicstammtischs der Comicbibliothek Renate, in Kooperation mit der Berthold-Leibinger-Stiftung, steht vor. Mentor diesmal ist der Comiczeichner Franz Suess, der 2024 die mit 25.000 EUR dotierte Auszeichnung des Comicbuchpreises der Berthold Leibinger Stiftung erhielt. In seinem prämierten Band »Jakob Neyder« erzählt er die Geschichte von dem Außenseiter Jakob, der versucht, seiner Verantwortung für eine Straftat zu entkommen. Ein Verbrechen ohne Not, das in ihm Schuldgefühle auslöst. Auf dem Stammtisch zeigt der Preisträger Einblick in sein Schaffen. Der 1961 geborene Franz Suess studierte Malerei und Graphik an der Kunstuniversität Linz. Er lebt und arbeitet in Wien. Der prämierte Band soll etwa 170 Seiten umfassen und bis Mitte 2024 fertiggestellt werden.

A special edition of the Renate Comic Library’s digital comics meetup, in cooperation with the Berthold Leibinger Foundation, is coming. The mentor this time is comic artist Franz Suess, who received the 25,000 EUR Comic Book Award of the Berthold Leibinger Foundation in 2023. In the award-winning book “Jakob Neyder”, Franz Suess tells the story of the outsider Jakob, who tries to escape his responsibility for a criminal offence. A crime without necessity that triggers feelings of guilt in him. At the digital meetup, the award-winning artist will give an insight into his work. Born in 1961, Franz Suess studied painting and graphic art at the University of Art in Linz. He lives and works in Vienna. The award-winning volume will comprise around 170 pages and be completed by mid-2024.
